Description

Zircon Gemstone; Brilliant Beauty with an Ancient History

Zircon is a valuable and historically significant gemstone whose name is traditionally associated with the Persian words “Zar”, meaning gold, and “Gun”, meaning color. The name refers to the golden appearance of some Zircon specimens.

Zircon belongs to the silicate mineral group and is considered one of the oldest known minerals on Earth. It occurs naturally in a wide range of colors, including colorless, yellow, orange, brown, red, blue, and green.

Zircon Colors and Varieties

  • Matara: A colorless variety that can sometimes resemble Diamond because of its brilliance.
  • Hyacinth: Yellow, orange, brown, and reddish-brown Zircon.
  • Starlite: Blue Zircon, one of the most popular color varieties.
  • Jargoon: Light yellow or light gray Zircon.

Color and clarity are important factors when evaluating Zircon. Red Zircon can be particularly valuable, while natural green Zircon is considered rare.

Heat Treatment

Some Zircon specimens are heat-treated to modify their color. For example, brown Zircon may be heated at approximately 800–1000°C to produce colorless or blue varieties. Some heat-induced colors may gradually change when exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation.

Optical and Physical Properties

Despite having relatively good hardness, Zircon is a brittle gemstone, and its faceted edges can be damaged by impact. It is therefore recommended to store Zircon pieces separately from one another and from other gemstones to prevent scratching.

One of Zircon’s most remarkable characteristics is its exceptional brilliance and dispersion, which can create impressive flashes of light and a lively appearance. Zircon also has a relatively high specific gravity compared with many other gemstones.
