Description

Moonstone

Moonstone is a beautiful gemstone from the feldspar group, best known for its distinctive optical phenomenon called adularescence. This effect appears as a soft, floating white or blue glow that moves across the surface of the stone when it is viewed from different angles, creating an appearance similar to moonlight.

Moonstone can occur in white, colorless, gray, peach, pink, yellow and brown shades. Specimens with a strong blue adularescent glow and good transparency are generally more desirable. Moonstone is mainly associated with intergrowths of orthoclase and albite feldspars, and their layered structure produces its characteristic optical effect.

With a hardness of approximately 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, moonstone is moderately resistant to scratches but can be sensitive to impact. It is best cleaned with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners should be avoided.

Important sources of moonstone include India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania, Myanmar and Australia. Its soft glow and attractive appearance make it popular for rings, necklaces, earrings and other types of jewelry.

In traditional beliefs, moonstone is associated with calmness, intuition, balance and feminine energy. These associations are traditional beliefs and are not scientifically proven.
