Description
Damleh Sapphire
Damleh Sapphire, also known as a Cabochon Sapphire, is a sapphire polished with a smooth, curved and domed surface rather than multiple faceted faces. Its appearance is mainly influenced by the gemstone’s color, clarity and natural characteristics.
Sapphire is a variety of corundum, composed primarily of aluminum oxide. The blue color of sapphire is generally associated with the presence of iron and titanium. Sapphires with attractive blue color, good clarity and desirable quality are considered more valuable.
Cabochon cutting can enhance the beauty of sapphires with lower transparency or visible inclusions. Some cabochon sapphires may display optical phenomena such as chatoyancy (Cat’s Eye) or asterism (Star Effect). The domed surface helps reveal these effects clearly.
With a hardness of approximately 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphire is one of the hardest natural gemstones after diamond and has excellent resistance to scratching. Nevertheless, it should be protected from strong impacts, harsh chemicals and sudden temperature changes to preserve its polished surface and appearance.
