Description

Sphene (Titanite)

Sphene, also known by its mineralogical name Titanite, is a rare and attractive gemstone valued for its exceptional brilliance, strong light dispersion and vivid fire. The name titanite refers to the presence of titanium in its chemical composition.

Titanite is a calcium titanium silicate mineral and commonly occurs in green, yellow, yellowish-green, brown and sometimes orange colors. Green and yellowish-green specimens are particularly popular. Iron and other trace elements can influence the color of this gemstone.

One of the most remarkable characteristics of sphene is its exceptionally high light dispersion, which can produce colorful flashes and a fiery appearance similar to that of diamond. Titanite also exhibits noticeable birefringence. However, with a hardness of approximately 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, it is relatively susceptible to scratches and impact and should be worn with care, especially in rings.

Important sources of titanite include Pakistan, Russia, Brazil, Madagascar, Austria, Canada and the United States. Transparent specimens with attractive color, high dispersion and good clarity are especially desirable. Sphene is mainly used in decorative jewelry, earrings, necklaces and gemstone collections.

Because of its strong brilliance and attractive appearance, titanite can sometimes be confused with gemstones such as diamond, zircon, sphalerite and tourmaline. Its optical properties, hardness and specific gravity help distinguish it from these gemstones.
